Lawrence Lewis, Jr. Park

Lawrence Lewis, Jr. Park is a 24-acre site located on the James River and accessible from Route 5 via Wilcox Wharf Road. It includes three shelters (one with picnic tables), restroom area, fishing and birding pier, wooded trails, and a boat ramp. 

Primitive Camp Sites

The Lawrence Lewis, Jr. Park Primitive Camping Area is available for use by bicyclists using the Virginia Capital Trail and paddlers exploring the James River and Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. The Lawrence Lewis, Jr. Park Primitive Camping Area is a cooperative project of Charles City County, James River Association, and Virginia Capital Trail Foundation. Registration is required to use the primitive camping area. Registration can be made online or in person Monday – Friday from 8 am – 4:30 pm. Your confirmation permit should be carried with you on the date of your reservation. Reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance. 

Rental Cost: Primitive Campsite #1, #2, and #3 ($15.00 per night, maximum one night, maximum four campers). | Group Camping Area ($100 per night, one night maximum, maximum 20 campers). 

Fishing Pier

A Virginia Fresh Water Fishing License is required to fish at the Park. (Click Here For License Information) 

Boat Ramp

  • October - April: The Boat ramp is open from dawn to dusk during the months of October - April.   
  • May - September: Monday - Friday (11 am - 7:30 pm) and Saturday, Sunday and Holidays (7:00 am - 7:30 pm) 
  • Daily Launch Fees: Resident = $0 | Non-Resident = $5.00 per launch
  • Season Pass Fees:  Residents: One FREE decal per vehicle per year | $5.00 for additional vehicles or replacements | Non-Residents: $35.00 per year per vehicle | $15.00 for additional vehicles | $5.00 for replacement decal
